Reports from Djibouti say that the government of Ismail Omar Guelleh has in the past few hours placed the commanders of the country’s police and military under house arrest.
The commanders are suspected of plotting to overthrow President Guelleh and overthrow the long-serving president.
Djibouti’s military chief, General Zakariya Sheikh Ibrahim, and police chief, Colonel Abdullahi Farah, have been placed under house arrest by security forces and presidential guards, who cannot leave their homes, according to independent sources.
President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who has been accused of being a dictator, is worried about the military overthrow of Djibouti, which he has ruled for more than 22 years.
He often holds elections in the eyes of the world, with no strong opposition in the country, and the coup is believed to have garnered widespread support, as the country has been ruled by a single man for many years.
